Piloting a Solution
Once a solution is selected, the team may consider to run a pilot for the solution before implement it into production. It is important to devise on a pilot when changes are large in scope, and it could cause expensive or expansive consequence, or where the solution is difficult to reverse after implemented.
A pilot is a limited trial of a solution in a live environment that would help to mitigate the possibility of disruptive issues that may arise when the solution is implemented. The live production environment will always have variables that teams can’t account for, particularly when people are involved in the process.
The benefits of piloting a solution includes:
- Use of resources are limited, which reduces waste if the solution turns out to be incorrect or not effective in resolving the problem
- Confirmation that expected results occur
- Allows troubleshooting of a new solution on a smaller scale
- Lets employees out side of the Six Sigma team provide feedback on the solution
Documentation
Almost any organization will require new processes or changes to processes to be recorded in standard operating procedures (SOPs).
Six Sigma teams might be responsible for drafting documentation or might need to work with knowledge management resources to create the SOPs.
Teams might also create general communications letting other staff members know about the upcoming changes and the reasons for those changes.as well as general reference documents such as cheat sheets and Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs).
Training
Six Sigma teams are usually not responsible for completing the user/staff training on the improvements they made. They normally conduct the “train the trainer” sessions to train the Subject Matter Experts or delegates in the department(s) imparted by the upcoming changes.
Transition
During the improve phase of a DMAIC project, teams should begin to consider the need to transition the process back to the business and process owner. Though transition is part of the Control phase, the approach on how process should be measured and monitored after Go-Live should be considered during the Improve phase.
